Industry influence
As the world shifts away from a dependence on fossil fuels, actors with a vested interest in preserving the high carbon status quo are working hard to shape the political, media and regulatory environment. From treaties signed at global summits through to local planning decisions, fossil fuel actors and their enabling networks are deploying a complex array of strategies to influence the pace and scale of the low-carbon transition.
ARIA works to connect and support non-profits, academics, researchers, investigative reporters and legal experts who scrutinise the power of the fossil fuel industry in the climate space, with a particular focus on Europe. Our aim is to strengthen capacity that can interrogate the industry and its enablers promoting the long-term production and use of fossil fuels. We also lead investigations that explore the multi-sectoral influence of those actors in shaping politics, narratives and policies on the continent.
ARIA also conducts research aimed at understanding how the global PR industry, particularly consultants and advisory firms, intersect with high-carbon industries. As part of this work, ARIA has produced briefings around the COP summits to give media and civil society stakeholders an in-depth understanding of the how these actors operate around the talks.
