Fossil fuels

Developing new oil and gas production is incompatible with keeping global warming to 1.5°C. Fundamental transformation is needed to promote an equitable energy transition. But fossil fuel companies across the world are leveraging their substantial political and financial influence to block the policies that would drive investment away from fossil fuels and towards cleaner energies.

ARIA looks at the actors and policies that work to lock-in fossil fuel use and slow the low carbon transition. We investigate how the industry influences international political and legal systems, has evaded sanctions on Russian exports, and established a network of lobbyists across the globe. Our research has covered the financial support the industry receives to support fossil fuel extraction: from the billions of dollars of export credit agency and multilateral financing for major oil and gas infrastructure projects, to the huge tax breaks and subsidies being proposed for carbon capture and storage (CCS) and other emissions reductions technologies.
